Hermann Goering
Hermann Goering was born on January 12, 1893, in Rosenheim, Bavaria. Hermann’s father was a senior officer in the military, so he grew up preparing to fight in the German Army. In 1912, he joined fight during World War I. He was with the infantry for a couple months before getting injured. After being injured, Hermann became a pilot in the German Army Air Service. He was very successful and had over 22 victories as a pilot for Germany.
After the First World War ended, Goering continued as a pilot for a company in Holland. In 1923, Goering heard Adolf Hitler speak and went back to live in Germany. Here, Goering joined the Nazi Party and quickly found his way into Hitler’s inner circle. Hitler appointed Hermann head of his Stormtroopers. In 1932, Goering became president of the Nazi Party. When Hitler became chancellor of Germany, Goering became a cabinet minister without portforlio. In 1933, after the Reichstag Fire, Goering ordered violence against German Communists. Also, he helped Himmler set up the German concentration camps.
After the start of World War II, Goering became head of Germany’s armed forces. He was soon made head of the Luftwaffe and was responsible for the defeat of France, Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg in 1940. Goering surrendered to the United States in Austria after Adolf Hitler committed suicide on May 8th, 1945. Instead of facing execution after the Nuremberg Trials, he killed himself with a cyanide pill on October 15th, 1946.
